The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is a great example, with a great build that is very lightweight. It comes in at under 3 pounds which is great to hold in tablet mode. The keyboard takes some getting used to. It has a MagLev design, resulting in a 24 percent reduction in thickness.

l9P8v. What Is the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1?Dell builds a desirable ultraportable laptop with a twist The Dell XPS 13 9310 2-in-1, placing No. 8 in our rating of the Best Laptops of 2023, can operate as both a laptop and a tablet. Itâs this flexibility, combined with Dellâs quality construction and Intelâs Evo-certified central processing units, that makes the convertible version of the XPS 13 feel like a significant value in the 13-inch segment. Now discontinued, the XPS 13 2-in-1 is still available at retailers but may be harder to find as Dell moves 2-in-1 functionality to its Inspiron line of XPS 13 2-in-1 ReviewProsPremium materialsSharp and bright touchscreenFast with decent battery lifeConsShallow keyboardIntegrated graphicsMemory and SSD not upgradable The Dell XPS lineup packs more pixels and performance than the entry-level Inspiron or the office-focused Latitude. Theyâre stylish, powerful laptops that consistently rate highly among professional reviewers. The XPS 2-in-1 retains the thin, lightweight design of the regular XPS 13 but with a touch screen that swivels 360 degrees and offers four different viewing configurations. Most mainstream laptops donât offer this two devices into one usually brings compromise, however, and the XPS 13 2-in-1 is no exception. Specifically, the keyboardâs shallow depth isn't as comfortable to type on as some other laptops. Reviewers also dislike how Dell soldered the memory modules and hard drive to the motherboard so they canât be swapped out for an upgrade. But even these demerits and the price premium over the regular XPS 13 the 2-in-1 model starts at $1,169 donât detract from this Dellâs impressive reviewers like the thin-bezel screen with a taller 1610 aspect ratio. This format allows a bit more real estate on small screens without sacrificing portability. While reviewers aren't blown away by the battery life, they appreciate the improved balance between speed and efficiency that Intelâs Evo-certified CPUs deliver. Since youâll pay more for any convertible laptop, the XPS 13 2-in-1 only makes sense when consistently used as a tablet, especially with a stylus and illustration XPS 13 2-in 1 The Bottom LineDigital artists, travelers, and anyone who likes a laptop with extra features will like the XPS 13 2-in-1. Itâs not ideal to hold a 3-pound laptop like a tablet because the keyboard will always be exposed and can be damaged. But if necessary, this Dell can transform how you work and how you show your work to clients. If you donât need the flexibility of a 2-in-1, you should look at the regular XPS 13 or the Acer Swift XPS 13 2-in 1 PriceThe base XPS 13 2-in-1 model 7390 costs $1, and comes with an Intel Core i7-1065G7 running at a peak GHz, 8 gigabytes of DDR4 memory, Intel Iris graphics, a 256 GB SSD, and a touch screen at 1920 x 1200 pixels. Prices can approach the $2,000 mark if you choose to upgrade. Options include a UHD+ screen 3840 x 2400 pixels, Intel Core i7-1165G7 CPU running at a peak of GHz, Intel Iris Xe graphics, up to 32 GB RAM, and up to a 2 TB XPS 13 2-in 1 DesignThe convertible version of the XPS 13 has a chassis like a luxury sports car. Itâs rigid, lightweight, and made with durable and attractive materials. The full aluminum case is topped with carbon fiber, and the screen is made with Corning Gorilla Glass. Even the steel hinges are covered in aluminum for added strength. The XPS 13 2-in-1 feels built to last and justifies its price. The silver case and the black carbon base are a tasteful contrast they are the only color combination available. The dimensions reinforce this convertible laptop's sporty profile. At inches thick, itâs slimmer than the MacBook Air and almost every other laptop on our rating save for the Google Pixelbook Go. At pounds, itâs slightly heavier than the regular XPS 13 but well in line with other ultraportable laptops without a tablet its 360-degree swiveling screen, the XPS 13 2-in-1 can act like a big picture frame, with the base behind the screen acting as a stand in either a landscape or a portrait display. It can also flip upside down in a âtentâ configuration when you donât want the keyboard to rest on a surface. Finally, it can swivel entirely and lock in tablet XPS 13 2-in 1 PerformanceProfessional reviewers say the XPS 13 2-in-1 can tackle photo editing and stream video with performance and without overheating. The laptopâs base remains cool to the touch even during continuous use such as watching full-screen videos. The SSD has fast write speeds, and processor choices include the Intel Core i7-1065G7 or i7-1165G7. The 11th-generation Intel chips are fast and help the XPS 13 2-in-1 punch above its weight. Still, its integrated graphics processor has limits. For better 3D graphics performance when gaming, youâll want an XPS 15 with its dedicated Nvidia RTX GPU. Note that the XPS 13 2-in-1 can't be upgraded after you purchase it, so be sure to get a configuration that will meet your current and future XPS 13 2-in 1 DisplaysThe convertible version of the XPS 13 comes with a diagonal LED touch screen that automatically rotates the displayed image to the desired orientation. The standard screen is 1920 x 1200 pixels, which due to the 1610 aspect ratio is slightly taller than an ordinary HD display. While itâs sharp enough for average use, reviewers note it looks pixelated up close. Splurge for the UHD+ display, and you'll get better than 4K resolution. At 3840 x 2400, this screen beats Appleâs Retina display in color and detail by a wide margin. The UHD+ is an IPS panel with viewing angles up to 170 degrees, which is an essential feature for a laptop thatâs meant to be rotated, turned, and flipped. This display has a 1,0001 contrast ratio, 500-nit brightness, and high dynamic range capability. Reviewers note both screens are brighter and larger than competitors. Dell says the XPS 13 2-in-1's stylus has 2048 sensitivity levels for âa more natural handwriting experience.âDell XPS 13 2-in 1 Ports and AudioThere are only two USB-C ports on the XPS 13 2-in-1, one of which runs at Thunderbolt 4 speed 40 GBps, and both of which can be used for charging. A USB-A to USB-C adapter comes included. Dell sells accessory adapters for HDMI and ethernet connections. A microSD reader and a headphone jack are also onboard. Reviewers say the speakers were generally clear and refined, but their sound varies depending on how you orient the laptop. The speakers are downward-firing at the edges of the base. The convertible version of the XPS 13 supports Wi-Fi XPS 13 2-in 1 Keyboard, Touchpad, and WebcamThe webcam's design is rather poor. It's positioned at the bottom of the screen bezel, not the top like in most laptops. So when youâre on a Zoom call, everyone will see your fingers magnified instead of the camera focusing on your face. In addition, the webcam doesnât flip its image automatically when flipping over the screen to make the camera sit on top. Finally, the 720p resolution is only touchpad is much better. Dellâs software recognizes when youâve palmed the touchpad to avoid accidental clicks and swipes. For video calls and typing, there are much better its quest to be slim and trim, Dell had to pare down the height of the keys. Their shallow depth made many reviewers uncomfortable when typing for long periods of time. The keys are backlit, but many larger laptops have a better keyboard XPS 13 2-in 1 Security Dell includes a fingerprint scanner and an infrared camera for facial recognition, both of which are compatible with the Windows Hello secure login service. Dell also offers software to run other software separately from the Windows environment as part of its Protected Workspace XPS 13 2-in 1 Battery LifeIntelâs Evo-certified CPUs are supposed to meet stricter targets for battery life a minimum of nine hours, quicker recharging, and maintaining more even performance when the laptop is on AC power or the battery alone. Professional reviewers got anywhere from 12 to 14 hours on a charge. Battery life will vary depending on how you use the computer and whether you choose the HD or QHD+ XPS 13 2-in-1 vs. the CompetitionDell XPS 13 2-in-1 vs. HP Envy x360The HP Envy x360 is similar in many ways to the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1. The keyboard is markedly better and is more comfortable for typing, although the touchpad is cramped. Itâs plainer-looking than the Dell and also thicker. The weight is roughly the same. HP offers AMD processors as an alternative to Intel which are also available and a USB-A port. The Envy x360 is also more affordable with prices starting under $ XPS 13 2-in-1 vs. Lenovo Chromebook DuetThe Lenovo Chromebook Duet is a small convertible laptop with a screen and nowhere near the performance, image quality, or features of the Dell. That said, it is somewhat smaller and more portable. It's also much cheaper, starting at $229. If you can get by with the Chrome OS operating system, the Chromebook Duet could be a better choice. Same Charter, New Blueprint With XPS, our design charter is to simplify the user experience so that the technology almost blends into the background and the device serves as an extension of you. But sometimes itâs cool to understand how things are made, so letâs talk about all the advanced engineering that allowed us to achieve our design and experience goal. In the past, youâve seen XPS reimagine the front-of-screen experience with our trademark InfinityEdge design that propelled the industry to adopt thinner bezels and offer a greater viewing experience in the same or smaller footprint. In the spirit of pushing boundaries, or shrinking boundaries, our engineering team journeyed inwards with the same mission to get the XPS 13 as compact as possible for customers who prioritize mobility. This time, our engineers had to rethink the architectural layout under-the-hood. XPS 13 9305 left compared to new XPS 13 9315 right. This kickstarted a long and ambitious journey to âminiaturizeâ the motherboard to be smaller than the one found in our previous XPS 13 2021. In fact, itâs the smallest motherboard ever created and fitted for a Dell PC. This engineering marvel created the architectural space needed to pack in a tapestry of new technologies and enlarge the speaker enclosures. The end result is an XPS 13 that is thinner and lighter, yet better sounding, high performing and long lasting. The tablets might win this round as this time itâs the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, a system Iâm used to seeing as a proper convertible. This time around, itâs taken the form of a detachable and I canât say that I hate it. The $1,399 $1,049 starting hybrid offers a bright display with a responsive stylus, and attachable keyboard thatâs surprisingly comfortable to type on. The tablet surprised me with excellent cameras and good graphics performance. However, as a laptop, the XPS 13 2-in-1 has a limited amount of ports and middling performance. Itâs a fine work-on-the-go setup, but if you need more power, youâll be better off looking at other options. That means it wonât be gracing either our best laptops, best 2-in-1 or best Dell laptops pages. But before you write the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 off, read on to learn the ins and outs of a seriously versatile hybrid. Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 pricing and configurationsThe Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 starts at $1,049 âpacking a 1-GHz Intel Core i5-1230U processor with 8GB of RAM, a 512GB 4x4 SSD, and integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics with a 13-inch, 2880 x 1920 touch display. The unit I reviewed doubles the RAM and adds the XPS 13 Folio and Stylus, which ups the price at $1,399. Need more power? The top-tier model bumps the specs up to an Intel Core i7-1250U CPU, and a 1TB PCIe 4x4 SSD with the bundled Folio and XPS 13 2-in-1 designWhile Iâm typically not a fan of tablets, Iâve got to say that Iâm digging the XPS 13 2-in-1âs style. The slateâs rear panel is made of anodized aluminum in a bluish-gray hue that Dell calls Sky. The XPS logo sparkles in the center of the panel right below the 11-megapixel rear-mounted camera. Youâll find the power button on the top-right corner with a pair of volume buttons along the top left. A magnetic patch sits in between the two, awaiting the arrival of the XPS Stylus more on that later. Meanwhile, youâll find a speaker on either side of the tablet. A cluster of magnetic connectors sit at the bottom, which provides a strong grip when attached to the bundled XPS Folio that transforms the tablet into a full-blown laptop. I tried vigorously shaking the tablet loose, but the magnetic grip did not relent. Image credit FutureThe front of the tablet shows off the eye-catching 13-inch touchscreen, with a somewhat distractingly thick black bezel. Iâve become so spoiled by the 4-sided InfinityEdge near bezel-less screens on traditional XPS laptops that seeing such a thick border is even more off putting than usual. The front-facing 5MP IR camera sits smack dab in the top bezel. The XPS Folio is made of a dark gray, slightly textured plastic material. The bottom of the Folio has Dellâs logo stamped into the center, while the top portion of the accessory has three foldable sections. These allow the Folio to form a sturdy kickstand that allows the tablet to stand upright like a traditional laptop. Image credit FutureBy itself, the XPS 13 2-in-1 tablet measures x x inches and weighs only pounds. Combined with the Folio, the convertibleâs weight increases to pounds. The Microsoft Surface Pro 9âs tablet x x inches is slightly heavier at pounds tablet only. Connected to the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard, the Microsoft Surface Pro 9âs weight jumps to pounds. The HP Spectre x360 14 2-in-1 3 pounds, x x inches is heavier than both detachables. The Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360 pounds, 14 x 9 x inches as a 16-inch system is bigger and heavier than the other systems. Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 securityImage credit FutureThe Dell 13 2-in-1 doesnât have a lot of security features, but itâs not completely without protection. The power button doubles as a Windows Hello-compatible fingerprint reader. Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 portsImage credit FutureThis is going to be a pretty short section as the XPS 13 2-in-1 only has two ports ââ a pair of Thunderbolt 4 ports on the left. That means that thereâs no headphone jack. But never fear, Dell also includes a dongle if you want to plug in a pair of wired headphones. If not, check out our best wireless headphones and best wireless earbuds XPS 13 2-in-1 displayNot only is the XPS 13 2-in-1âs 13-inch, 2800 x 1920p touch display bright, itâs also plenty sharp. In fact, my only gripe would be that itâs not as vibrant as Iâve come to expect from the XPS line of laptops. Image credit FutureStill, when I watched The Blackening trailer, the touch panel did a fine job of handling the different skin tones of the Black cast. My eyes were immediately drawn to the one actorâs golden dress and anotherâs magenta blouse. Details were so sharp that I could see individual eyelashes and flyaway strands of hair. Measuring for color gamut, I learned the XPS 13 2-in-1 panel only reproduced of the DCI-P3 color gamut, which is well below the premium category average. No, but I had an enjoyable time listening to SZAâs âKill Bill.â The airy tune of scorned love and mourning had a surprising amount of separation which made it easy to identify the piano, guitar, and drums. The singerâs disassociated soprano was nice and clear. The bass is, unsurprisingly, non-existent as I learned on Armani White and Denzel Curryâs âGOATED.â Try as the speakers might, even with an assist from the pre-installed WavesMaxx Audio software, the detachableâs low-end was bloated and distorted. Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 keyboard and touchpadThe keyboard in the XPS Folio offers big keys and bright backlighting. That made typing sans errors pretty easy as I had a 99% accuracy rate to go alongside my 70 word-per-minute average on the 10fastfingers test. Usually, my accuracy rating is somewhere around 95% while 70 wpm is my normal typing speed. However, the keys were a bit stiff and I felt myself bottoming out. Image credit FutureThe x touchpad is surprisingly spacious for a detachable keyboard, with good palm rejection and fast response for multi gesture Windows 11 commands. But using the trackpad to enter left or right click commands was mushy at best. Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 performanceThe Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 has an Intel i5-1230U processor with 8GB of RAM and 512GB 4x4 SSD. Itâs a mid-tier configuration, but that didnât stop it from juggling 60 open Google Chrome tabs that held a robust mix of Google Docs, Sheets and Presentations along with a few tabs for Twitch and YouTube rounded out with a few social media and news tabs. However, it was no match for the Spectre 14 x360 7,243 or the Surface Pro 9 8,541 with their Intel Core i7-1255U CPUs or the Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360âs Intel Core i7-1360p CPU 8,250. Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 graphicsWhenever I see integrated graphics, I temper my expectations as the Intel Iris Xe Graphics really arenât made for gaming. Can it run older or games with less demanding spec requirements? Sure, but still I try not to get my hopes up. However, the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 threw me for a loop when it dropped 60 frames per second on the Sid Meierâs Civilization VI benchmark at 1080p, cruising past the 50-fps category average. On the rear, you have a 2160p shooter while the front-facing camera is 1080p. Both shooters took great photos, however, the rear shooter delivered more saturated colors which was great for my skin tone, which looked otherwise washed out on the front-facing camera. Image credit FutureWhen it came to my pink hoodie with its red rose, the front shooter reproduced more accurately. Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 software and warrantyThe Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 comes pre-installed with several branded utilities such as Dell Customer Connect so you have quick access to tech support. Dell Digital Delivery installs any software you ordered with the system while Dell Update ensures that your apps always have the latest firmware and BIOS versions. Check out Tech Support Showdown our annual special report. Bottom lineIâm not a fan of tablets, especially tablets posing as laptop replacements. I spent a few days working on the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and Iâve got to say, I didnât hate it, but Iâm still not sold on the idea. For $1,049, you get a system with an eye-catching lightweight design, a bright display and surprisingly good graphics performance for integrated graphics and a pair of excellent webcams. However, for the price, I want slightly more power, a more vivid display, a few more ports and definitely longer battery life. If you want a laptop with those things, Iâd point you in the direction of the HP Spectre x360 14 2-in-1 or any of the laptops on our best 2-in-1 page. But if youâre looking for an extremely lightweight laptop with solid performance for working on the go, you should definitely consider the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1. Sherri L.
